All of us at Barker Martin, P.S., take conservation and environmental issues to heart. Not only are we stewards for our clients, but also of the communities to which we live and work, and to the greater world community. “Community” means more to us than simply the community association clients we represent. It is our goal to foster proactive energy conservation and awareness within our professional work environment and personal lives. To this end, the Barker Martin team has implemented the following eco-friendly protocols (which, for a law firm within an industry known for causing entire forests to be felled to create paper products, we believe is pretty darn good):
• To the greatest extent possible, we utilize digital documents in lieu of paper documents. Documents are created digitally or scanned and drafts are circulated electronically. We even file legal pleadings and other documents electronically in courts that allow such filings. We have replaced over 70 percent of written correspondence with email.
• To encourage use of mass transportation over single occupancy vehicles, the firm provides free monthly bus and rail transportation vouchers for all employees.
• To limit reliance upon plastic water bottles, the firm utilizes free-standing water dispensers at each office.
• The firm has replaced all plastic plates, cups and cutlery with glass and ceramic dishware. We also promote aggressive recycling within our offices.
• To promote a healthy lifestyle, the firm provides a monthly $25 reimbursement for health club membership to all employees.
We continue to strive to look at other areas where we can do our part to promote ecological preservation and reduction of green house gas emissions. Our efforts may not constitute much of a difference, but we believe every bit helps. Plus, conservation is a mindset—not to be practiced haphazardly. We hope our contribution may influence others in a community-wide effort to promote eco-friendly business policies.
